In Celtic lore, written about by John Matthews in The Sidhe: Wisdom from the Celtic Otherworld, this symbol might be “seen” on magical doorways when using the imagination to explore the “Otherworld” available most simply by closing ones eyes.
In Reiki, a healing tradition, a similar symbol appears. Named cho ku rei, it represents protection or "all the powers of the universe.”
Commentary [draft]
In the time-constrained, shared reality, or ordinary world, the infinity symbol is as close as one might come to a timeless representation.
It is a meaningful abstraction that, In mathematics, represents endlessness of series. The procession of things, ignoring time or space (or both) as constraints.
With infinity, conceptually, possibilities arise, and with infinity can come a sense of unfettering the imagination. In relation to the non-ordinary (Otherworld) however, without constraints, orientation to infinity is just as likely to have us lost.
Which is where the above symbols comes in. The spiral of possibilities starts, and then is interrupted. We orient, and get to realizing possibilities, when we find (paradoxically) grounding in the Otherworld.
