Working Definition

Consciousness is participatory self-hood informed by object integration. Objects include both what is materially present and non-materially or ephemerally present in the form of identifiable content.

With reference to the figure below, object integration is the central (vertical) channel and may or may not be true to one’s own awareness or reality model. Consciousness then would refer to all channel-centered activities of all perceptually- and syntactically-coherent channels balancing communications between conditioned (at the top) and disoriented (at the bottom) integrations. Visually, imagine a vertical line passing through the center of the three-tier information summary above. Humans have varying degrees of self-awareness and/or sovereign agency, resulting in experience being distorted so we lose track of the centering intrinsic to our own central channel. This is how consciousness itself can be both ever-present and elusive.
